Is it normal to get a dog in university?

I really want to have a puppy to keep me company but I'm worried that I might not have time for it..? Is it normal to get a pet when you're living off campus? I'd appreciate any advice :)

  • If you’re a full time student I don’t see how there would be time to train it and give it exercise and attention enough. When I was in college full time I felt terrible because I couldn’t give my bunny much attention and would pretty much see her in the morning to change her water and feed her that would be about it. They’re in your life for a period of time but to them it’s there lifetime. Don’t give it a lonely life.

I agree with everything else people said in the comments, but its also important to know that you also usually can't have pets if you live on campus. They need to be registered emotional support animals which is a lengthy process.

It's better to consider three question:
    1. Do you have enough time to feed or walk a dog?
-Make sure you can arrange the time reasonably, do not delay your study.

    2. Is your dorm/apartment/flat available to raise a dog?
    - Confirm whether or not the place you will live allows to a dog. If NO, you should register it as an emotional support dog in advance. In some cases, people (commonly children) who have mental disabilities are permitted to go to school with their therapy dogs.

    3. Do your neighbors mind a dog?
-Someones are afraid of dogs (even dog bark) for some reasons. To avoid this situation, you should ask your neighbors and ensure they would accept your dog.

I find a reliable site that registers an ESA. www.supportdogcertification.org/esa

I hope it's helpful for you.
