Is it normal to forget common words?

Sometimes I forget common words such as fork and have to make up words to describe them for example I once spent mins trying to remember the word for fork and had to ask for a four pronged stabbing thing (thankfully around relatives). About half and hour or so later I remembered the word fork and cutlery. Also I sometimes replace words e.g. I once said I am looking in my library when I was looking through my bag. This sort of thing happens at least once every few months.

  • Hi,

this has been happening to me and it has been increasing over the last months. English is also not my first language and I am currently trying to learn German(which might be the reason behind this idk). But along that forgetfulness, I have been feeling a general mental decline, e.g. having difficulty building logical sentences and saying what I mean, struggling finding the right words, and also forgetting common words in the daily speech. Like every other sentence that comes out of me is butchered in one way or another.
I really hope it's not some initial signs of dementia, because I am 27 .. On the other hand I am smoking a a little bit of pot every day, so it could also be that.
Would be great to hear more people with similar cases.

  • I think I just had a laugh-gasm when I read 4-pronged stabey thing LMFAO. Yes I have the same problem sometimes but usually not common words like fork.

  • Once I forgot the name of the town I live in. Another time I forgot where Norwegian people come from, and said they're from Norwegia.

  • I once forgot the word for bus. A friend still makes fun of me for saying, "Let's catch the... erm... the brum-brum thing".

  • Same here, especially in English since it's not my first language.

  • I do that too. For me it's because my mind is really preoccupied with other things. I say it's normal. But frustrating.

  • Yes, it's normal and quite common to have lapses like that. It's like when I catch myself mixing wetters when laying something.
