I always flush old food/leftovers down the toilet. Never had problem with blockages or drains. Stops bins smelling and attracting unwanted 'visitors' (vermin).
If it goes to landfill, rainwater and groundwater run off takes it into water courses anyway.
I have flushed other things sometimes, but I'm careful not to flush anything not degradeable or as big as the hole at the bottom of the toilet.
My BF has never had to unblock the loo and accepts this as 'normal'

What kind of food do you flush?
