  • Gender related concepts consist loosely of 4 seperate scales:

    biological gender (your sex chromosomes)
    e.g. XX, XY or XXY

    gender identity (what gender you view yourself as, tends to be the same as biological gender)
    e.g. cisgendered, transgender, gender queer etc.

    gender expression (what gender you act like, dress like, governed by a balance between gender identity and social norms)
    e.g. male, female, androgenous

    sexuality (which gender you are attracted to)
    e.g. heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual

    Unfortunately people tend to guess your position on some some scales using your position on others. Obviously there are trends, but guessing that someone is homosexual, just because their gender expression does not completely match their biological gender is not a good idea. It seems that your parents have, however, doen just that.
