Is it normal to feel this helpless?

My cat, Darkness, is 15 years old and we had him checked for diabetes because he lost so much weight.
Tests, insulin and special food put us under financially. Insulin and foods were helping and he gained back the weight he lost (he's never been fat or chubbyto begin with)
Just recently he lost all appetite and has stopped drinking water and has completely given up on his litter box. He's become very weak and struggles to keep himself up.

I'm in my third trimester of my very first pregnancy and it's been so heartbreaking watching him struggle. Hes meowing and howling like hes in pain and he's wet from peeing and laying down because he's avoiding to do so where he lies.
Financially, we can't get him to a vet and our only option is euthanasia. But my bf is out of town a lot for work and he's having to deal with all of this from so far away. He won't be back for another 2 weeks.

All I can do is try to keep calm around him and give him as much comfort as much as he'll let me. He still won't eat or drink and I've tried to do it for him.
But I feel like all this suffering could have been avoided had we talked it through before buying medication and foods. I would have had more time to cope with the inevitable. Now Im forced to cope at the same rate that he's getting worse.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Costs of his vet visits werent a problem before. There's other reasons, that I don't wish to explain, as to why we're hurting financially all of a sudden.

But he passed away this morning and my MIL and I are taking him to a local shelter to cremate at a cheaper cost than the vet clinic we take him to.

Thank you, I really do appreciate your input and concerns.

Your cat has no enjoyment of his life and if you can't afford a vet you shouldn't have a cat in the first place.

He needs to be put out of his misery as a matter of urgency: surely there are vets who would let you pay off the bill for doing that?

Anyway, is he's really not eating or drinking he's going to die soon anyway, but why prolong it?

I am sorry you have to go through this. I had to euthanize my cat while my husband was out of state on business for a few months. He had the car too so I had to rely on friends. Fortunately I have a bestie that loves animals and she helped me through it. Do you have a friend you can call? Even an acquaintance who loves animals may be willing to lend support, or a neighbor. I can't imagine being pregnant and trying to cope. Just remember that you are feeling things more strongly now. You'll get through it. And dont dwell on the past, just focus on now and moving forward.

Do yourself and the cat a favor and have it euthanized. I know it will be hard but it's a lot more humane than watching it suffer.
