Is it normal to feel pain in a dream and still feel it when you wake up?

This morning I woke up from a strange dream where a man tried to attack me with an axe but was only able to cut my thumb since I supposedly used it to try and stop the axe and when I woke I felt a sting in my thumb exactly where I was cut by the axe in my dream. The pain and the sting was real since I accidentally cut myself a month ago and the sensation matches the feeling I got in my thumb.

It's normal when you're really hurting. When I pulled my back, I was dreaming about these guys kicking my back and throwing stones at my back. When I had a toothache, I dreamed of biting into a giant glass bottle and cutting up my gum, right where the toothache was. You're real life pain doesn't stop when you fall asleep, just your mind functions change.

I don’t know if it’s normal but I have had similar situations with pain and pleasure in my dreams. Just recently I had a dream of me falling on my stomach from a far distance and it actually hurt. When I woke up from my dream my stomach still was hurting it was shocking.

It is normal. Whatever you feel in the dream typically follows out when you’re awake and you can feel the pain for a little because of shock. In you case however, you finger already hurt so the dream was most likely caused as a result of cutting your thumb.

It could happen when you hit your thumb with something on the bed, so it made impact on your dream
