Is it normal to feel most modern houses have too much windows?

Its nice to have them so you have a light source if the power goes, and have the option to see out. But I feel too much of the wall surface on houses are usually covered in windows. Including my own house. Just one the living room wall I probably have like 3 meters of cohesive windows (that aren't even the only windows in that room) that also cover most of the height. And they are always covered with curtains to the point I sometimes forget there is a window there. Its not needed. I like to have privacy and feel sheltered when at home. Too much is also bad for insulation, both for keeping your house warm during winter (without too much electricity) and cool during summer.

A lot of areas have adopted building codes that require larger windows.

If the climate is moderate there is no significant heat gain/loss penalty (even the best modern windows are very poor insulators).

In an extremely hot or cold climate - windows should be no more than what is required for fire escape safety (you need to be able to climb trough them if they are removed or broken out) to minimize energy use for cooling or heating.

Fire escape windows are called Egress windows and are only required in sleeping areas. And they don't have to be very large. A 24"x36" window will suffice.

If it's that small opening or burning to death I'll wiggle my ass through that.

Yeah I hate the idea that people can see me.

I use to live in a small house out in the middle of no where and it was sorrounded by windows all over the house literally every room, and no hallways. It was extremely creepy at night.

I never thought about it, but a lot of the new builds I've been in do have a lot of huge windows. While I like the natural light windows offer, I also like enough wall to have both privacy and decoration in the room (like a place to hang photos/art/knick knacks, plus enough wall to add more color/pattern to the room). The nice thing is that there's always blinds and curtains for the former issue.

What I really don't care for is the "open concept" trend. Just not my thing, as I like separation of the rooms rather than a studio type layout.

Personal preference. I like big windows if they are double-paned for energy efficiency, if there's a view. Not if you're staring at the neighbor's wall. Feel free to move to a cave.

If it didn't rain and get cold, I'd live outside.

I love windows. I have over 30 large windows most 1m by 2m in a 3 bedroom house. At least half don't have draperies or blinds. I want to see out and enjoy the view.

That being said, I live on a hilltop with only a few houses in a distant view. I can be nude on my front porch an only a passing motorist could see me. Not sure unless they had a telephoto lens if they could tell I was nude.

I love windows, but not without blinds, and curtains. I truly value my privacy!

Glass has gotten more efficent for home making. It can be insulated as well as provide ample natural light which decrease the need of electric light.

Personally I perfer lots of small windows vs a few massive windows.

Lancet windows are where it's at
