How would you like to have been a soldier during the Crimean War when you might have had your leg amputated without any anesthetic, your stump then being sterilized in boiling tar? Or an unfortunate innocent victim during a 16th century witch hunt? Think about the past, compare it with today, and ask yourself which age you'd prefer to live in.
You've made an excellent point. But the fact that times have changed doesn't make the world any less harsh. While those circumstances may have been terrible people are still dying in horrible ways it's just not socially acceptable anymore.
