Is it normal to feel like my existence is insignificant

I read a post that said: "12/12/12 will be the last repetitive date I witness"
That's right, before the next one comes we'll all be dead.

It really got me thinking. My life is just a tiny insignificant story which will be soon lost in the past. I have done nothing special or worth being remembered in my life. And in just some years I will be nothing, just someone who lived many years ago and nobody cares about or even knows existed. I found this to be quite depressing, to say the least. I feel like I'll just have a mediocre uninteresting average life, with a boring marriage, a boring job, a boring life, and then someday I'll die and that will be it. The end of my sad existence. This is honestly depressing me more the more I think about it. Is it normal to feel like this and have this kind of thoughts?

“Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you're there.

It doesn't matter what you do, he said, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that's like you after you take your hands away. The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching, he said. The lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime.”
    ― Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

Yes, because it's true. Our existence has no significance. Although you are free to create, write, build -immortalize yourself through art, science and etc.
On the other hand, you can do nothing. There's absolutely no difference on a large enough scale.

By the way -there's nothing depressing about anything. Live your life one day at the time, and if you don't enjoy it, try changing things until it gets interesting.

    Then make it significant.

Our lives are indeed insignificant. The best you can do is to stop worrying about what your legacy will be and focus on living your life. When you're dead, nothing will matter anymore so why worry about it?

Well yeah, December is the 12th month. For the number assigned to a month to match the two digit year again, you will have to be alive in 2101. Science has extended our lifespan by quite a bit, but for the average lifespan to be over 100 years...I don't think that will happen. At least I hope it doesn't happen.

But don't feel bad, most of us wont be remembered. Being remembered isn't always a good thing. Do you want to be a Napoleon type and have a complex named after you? How about having a disease named after you?

I'm pretty sure people will look back and think my life is boring but does it really matter? They aren't living it so they can cast their judgement elsewhere. I'm not interested.

By that time I'd be exactly 108 years old. *shrugs* Who knows? It could happen.

Diseases are often named after doctors, though, so that could be neat.
