Lots of people think they're part of the "enlightened minority". Worse, they fail see the intelligence and complexity in other people which they see in themselves, and then too easily disregard them.
Wow I just happened upon this page and there is a huge flame war. People writing essays and shit. But your comment concisely summarizes the antithesis of OP's snobbery, not much more needs to be said.
I'm not trying to be snob about it, sorry if it came off that way. Nonetheless, I see these things every day and, when I wrote this, I had really had enough of it after having to fix a number of other people's mistakes. I understand no one is perfect, I get that, but there really is a limit to how much is acceptable. What's worse are those who purposely do a bang up job just so someone else will do it for them, thus getting out of work. It really starts to get under one's skin after a while.
Then there's the people who stand in front of a broken automatic door waving their arms at it to make it open when there is a sign written in bold black letters on a big ol' red background reading "Automatic door broken, please use other entrance"
Yes, I actually witnessed this, and it wasn't just one or two people, I saw about seven do it.
Oh I've done a few things that, while not the brightest of ideas, still turned out pretty well even though it really could have been done better in hindsight. The difference is that I learn from those mistakes quickly and do my best not to make it a habit.
Then again I am a lot harder on myself for my mistakes than the average person seems to be. I don't see my mistakes as acceptable, I see them as a learning experience and do my best not to repeat them but I never see them as acceptable nor are they excusable. I really hold fast to the belief that one should live and learn but when people refuse to learn it can be a bit of a problem.
IIN to feel like most of the people around you lack common sense?

I can think of one on this site who believes they're enlightened and spends all their time trying to prove it
