In the seventh grade, my best friend at that time had his birthday at a restaurant. He warned me in advance to not let the waiter know it was his birthday. But of course, I did, and soon the entire staff showed up to sing to him. Everyone else in the restaurant stared at him, and my friend was humiliated.
I can't say I could blame him. The birthday song is embarrassing to so many people likely because you don't know how to respond. Say thank you? Smile? Laugh? It's just an awkward position to be in, for some people.
