  • Some countries allow cousins to marry, some don't.

Anthropologically, incest taboos are the subject of speculation and several theories have been proposed, including the genetic predisposition and proximity concerns. It has been shown that incest taboos are universal across humans, but the definition of incest depends on the definition of 'family,' thus some cousins cannot marry, and some can. In some patrilineal societies, it is incest to get together with anyone from your father's side of the family, blood related or not, but it would be acceptable to form a romantic union with a half-sibling from your mother's side.

Genetically, as people seem to be concerned with that the most, cousins reproducing have just a slightly higher risk of their offspring inheriting genetic diseases than a normal couple would because of recessive genes.
