Is it normal to exercise but gain weight?

I go to the gym 6 days a week for 45 minutes a day. I tend to use the elliptical machine and always sweat up a storm. (I have also been dieting throughout this time.)I started off weighing 140 lbs, but now I weigh 145 and it's been 3 weeks! I noticed my clothes are starting to fit better, but I want faster and better results. Ideas for diet suppliments or exercises?

  • The big problem is that too much cardio is bad and messes up your body. Good effort but slow it down! Stay active but work out hard 3 to 4 times a week only. Also remember that diet is like 80 percent of it and while exercise is important it's like 20 percent.

  • You're building muscle which weighs more than fat. Try aerobic exercises more than strength training. Don't worry so much about what the scales say. It is about how you feel.

  • scales and weight is a horrible way of measuring how effective your workouts are, it's about how you feel and your health

  • You're building muscle, which is smaller than fat, but more dense. It takes around 6 weeks to see an improvement- and scales aren't always the best. You will look smaller, though.

  • First off, you are over working out your body. The ideal amount of times to work out a week is 3. You are working your body too hard. Also, muscle weighs more than fat.

    • Please, working out 6 times a week is only just acceptable. In reality you should only have a day off when your body needs it.

  • Cardio machines only burn fat the first 15minutes. After that it's only cardio training, and muscle conditioning.
You're gaining muscle (lean and heavier than fat) and possibly retaining water.
Make sure you're weighing in the morning.

    • That's complete bullshit, if your heart rate is at about 170-180 then you will only start to get a good fat burn after about a prolonged 30 mins on a static aerobic machine.

  • keep it up, you are in a good path. Just don't eat fats at all.
