I'm not from the UK but have friends who are and they all drink pretty regularly (to get drunk) too. More than I've seen my Canadian folk drink. You seem pretty normal by thier standards.
That being said, alcoholism is alcoholism no matter where you're from. It would take you the same quantity of drinking to become and alcoholic whether you live in the UK or Canada. So just because it is more normal to drink their does not mean you are not an alcoholic. It sounds like you've still got it somewhat under control given that you can regulate it when at uni...but I would be very careful because it sounds like you are dangerously close to stepping over that line.
