Is it normal to do this

There's a guy that he and I always speak when we see each other but nothing more than just hello. I finally want to ask him his name, how can I do that without seeming like a doof ball in front of him, I'm usually not good at approaching people but he seems friendly and I want to be his friend. Is it normal to approach someone just to ask them their name :)
