I went to school at a time that large numbers of African people were coming into the UK. The lads were teased and often referred to by their ethnic origin (just as I was called four eyes for wearing glasses). I still meet some of them today and they have fond memories of our school days, they all have good jobs, families and think that joining gangs and carrying knives and guns is something that you only watch on television dramas. I think that every attempt by governments to promote racial equality just ends up making the colour of someone’s skin an issue rather than something that doesn't matter
