Does he mention marriage? Is he divorced or widowed? How do you plan to bind your life-long commitment? Just trying to make sure your not his little trophy. My opinion: any man who would go against his kids in this circumstance (where you and the son were best friends) wouldn't think twice about your feelings if something better comes along. I would definitely try to use a little forsight. The older you get, sometimes the less you have in common. I'm afraid you may be headed for a brick wall.
