I think it's perfectly acceptable in this day and age to meet prospective lovers online. However, I think for it to be considered on the same level as an offline relationship in terms of commitment, you'd have to meet in person.
Prior to meeting in person, or indeed if it's an impossibility to meet, it's a good idea to Skype / webcam with microphones regularly - this at least simulates that face to face interaction and gives you some security that both of you meet each other's expectations, and makes it all the more 'real'.
