Is it normal to cry when you get a text you didnt want?

Last night I got a text and I was tired and wanted to go to sleep. when I opened it it said " Can I ask you something?" and I cried because I wanted to say NO so bad but I couldnt...

  • Yes you can. That is the great thing about non face-to-face communication. The text will still be their when you wake up.

  • It's normal to be over emotional when tired.

It's not normal to feel you have no choice but to respond to a stupid text asking what was probably an insignificant question. If it was important, it didn't need to be preceded with "can I ask..."

I had a client at one point who would text or call me between midnight and 4am asking me to come in to work at 5am. As a result, I now have the policy of any work texts/calls after 11pm are not answered. It's easy.

How are they to know if you're asleep or not? And no message necessarily has to be answered instantaneously. I sometimes go days without responding to friends or family. If it's really important, they'll let me know. If it's not, so what, let it go.

  • I get those also. I just wait till the next day. Especially if I'm already in bed. I have a friend who always has drama. Sometimes I just can't deal with it at that time. So I cal later.
