Is it normal to cry over fictional characters, but not real people?

I am continuously crying over the death of fictional characters, such as Fred Weasley and Primrose Everdeen, but I never cry over real people...

Is It Normal?

  • You mean like strangers you see on the news or people you actually know and are close to you?

  • Sounds like you have a bit of trouble connecting with real people and not stylised or idealised fictional people. Real people come with flaws and such, while fictional characters while sometimes flawed also represent archetypes which resonate with consumers of the media in question.

    • What do you mean by archetypes ? Doesn't that relate to architecture. 0.o?

      • Google is your friend, I'm not.

        • Already know what it means, however, it doesn't make sense in that context ?

          • Clearly you don't already know what it means in this context or any other. If you knew it would be resoundingly clear. I'm not going to give a Creative Writing 101 lecture here, suffice to say it has nothing whatsoever to do with architecture.

  • Probably because most real people are disgusting and their deaths warrant celebration instead of grief.

  • Yes very normal! I feel the same way! I have also wondered this as some I get so invested in and I feel I care about them more than people in reality !

    • Totally agree. Fictional character have done something so great that when something bad happens... Like they die... It is found necessary to care for someone that has done something so remarkable and selfless... I was watching 'Air' and i just broke... I had never ever cried towards a being fictional or real before then ^-^
