Being a young gay boy, there are things about the gay life that are new and challenging to me. For example, most of the older guys mention, "eating ass". So far, I haven't tried it, but some of my straight friends talk about eating their girl friends ass.
Are these thoughts and deeds normal?

This is really not a gay issue. Just as you mentioned there are straight men who enjoy this activity, but there are also straight men who don't. It is the same for gay people, some like it and some do not. There are no sexual acts that anyone gay or straight are required to preform or enjoy. Every one is unique, so just do what makes you comfortable and don't worry about what you think you are "supposed" to do.
Also, there is no such thing as a "gay life". You don't need to register as gay, you will not be receiving a membership card, or get invites in the mail to the annual gay people stock holder's meeting. All you will do is meet people, have relationships, sexual encounters, etc. If you are really lucky you will find "the one", just exactly as would be the case if you were straight. The only difference between the relationship of a gay man and a straight man is the gender of their partners.

The only thing not mentioned is that some straight men like their arses being eaten by women, although I'm not too sure how many women like doing it, apart from in porn. It seems to be the "flavour of the month" (pardon the pun) at the moment, judging from the requests I get on the sex lines, which although I'm not about to do it in real life is a positive change from gagging and choking, although that's still quite popular.

Remember that anything that two people consent to do in the bedroom, be it eating ass or getting shocked in the balls, is between them and that "normal" when it comes to sex means something different for everyone. As a gay man with a foot fetish, sucking on toes while fucking a guy is normal. Other people find that bizarre and horrifying.
I recommend you try it. The anus, when properly cleaned, is just as clean as any other part of the body (albeit a little moist). It is also a huge pleasure center. So many nerve endings. It really is a feeling like no other.
