Is it normal to crave a relationship with a guy i can't get

I'm currently a freshman in college, turning 19 in a few months. There is this guy I met online and though he isn't what most girls my age would consider ideal, to me he is absolutely breathtaking. He has the best sense of humor, he's really caring, and supports me from a distance (seeing as he lives on the other side of the country). He's turning 22 this year I think. I really want to have a relationship with him but I'm pretty sure I'm undateable. The distance isn't an issue because I'm planning on moving anyways after I graduate, but I don't know how to bring about talking about a relationship with him without freaking him out and scaring him away. I'll probably never pursue it but it seems like he's always on my mind, no matter what.
