I've often used the same technique. I use it to cope with worry as well. If I'm worried about something, I just don't think about it. I'm aware many people with psychological backgrounds will say that not dealing with the issue makes the issue worse and, of course, there is some truth there, but ignoring bad things does work for me and it's one of the techniques I use to get through life.
Another is treats. I've had a very frugal year and have treated myself by buying all kinds of things that make me happy.
