Is it normal to control yourself in your dreams?

  • I didn't think it was normal, no. I know it exists and I know some ethnic groups can do it pretty much universally, but my group can't. I've read books on it to try and learn but I think it's going to be one of those things I never learn to do. I so rarely dream anyway, that it might even be a wasted skill.

    • Have you ever had a dream that was so scary, you made yourself wake up?

      • Maybe once or twice in my life I've had dreams where I recognised I was in a dream. I know that's the beginning of lucidity. I never really got it beyond that, though, and I can't wake myself up (unless something good is about to happen, in which case I always seem to wake up).

      • I actually did that all the time as a child. The moment a nightmare got too scary for me, my dream self somehow knew that if I just closed my eyes really tight, I'd wake up. And I always did. Still happens occasionally. Dream flutterhigh is awesome.

        • I did that all the time. It's how I started lucid dreaming.
