Is it normal to clipper hard skin on your hands?

I work with horses and yes my hands get dirty and yes I wash them but the skin gets hard and whenever I get hard skin I have this habit of using nail clippers to cut it away and if it cuts my skin open i don't stop. i would really like to stop but if i don't have nail clippers I will use pins etc or just bite the skin, i also bite my nails. i have tried all the nail stuff to stop but find it really hard. Anyone got any help or answers please?

  • If you're working with your hands, your skin will thicken. There's no way to avoid that. I have a habit of picking my skin every time I feel a "zit" but I realized it's just in my head. If it gets too bad, you might want to speak to somebody about Dermatillomania, a type of OCD. It's a disorder where one picks their skin to the point of injury. I hope it's not too bad, otherwise you might get an infection if you have an open wound and keep on working.

    Best of luck. :)

  • i got this habit, too. it's similar to biting your nails off. we all pinched a needle slightly through our skin as a kid...for the same reason.
you can use pumice stone to rub it off, maybe this will help you.

  • The only solution I can think of would be to wear gloves and always use hand lotion. But then again I don't know if you can wear gloves and work with horses at the same time.
