Normal? No. But not unheard of. This is variation of a condition called pica, where a person eats materials that are not normally considered edible. It's far more common than most people would think. The primary things to be concerned about with this are poor nutrition (from eating inedibles instead of nutritive food) and harm to the digestive system, plus of course the risk of eating something toxic. I know well the digestive harm from personal experience; when I was little, I used to eat wood and plastic. Now, as an adult, I have IBS. I do not believe these are unrelated. So be careful of your odd eating habits.
