Whatever it may have started as, for many it's just a business, today. So many young men in the third world have no future to look forward to and zero possibility of getting work to support their families.
The terrorist organizations offer them employment. A suicide bomber's family may get a stipend for some years after his demise. Fighters for organizations like IS get paid monthly. This money goes back to their families to help support them.
Others fall victim to the religious bullshit believing that they are doing the work of their gawd. Religion has always been a powerful tool to use on the less intelligent, to control them.
But the bottom line is that it's all about the money. What was the first major offensive by IS? Oil fields in Iraq and Syria. Why oil fields? To finance their war.
And the West just let them keep them. Why? Because war is good business for them, too.
