You mean "treat others as you would have them treat you"?
I'm pretty you're only supposed to apply it if you don't know what the person wants already. Why would you need a rule if you already knew what the wanted, anyway? :P I think it's also meant to be used in more abstract and less specific terms, i.e. "treat others well".
Phrases like that never make sense if you try and take them too literally. Just step back and don't over-analyze them, and if you can't help but over-analyze then look at them laterally rather than literally.
