If I was willing to give my life for yours out of devotion you did something to earn it. Since you made me care about you so much I cant imagine my world with out you and I feel I ow you a debt.
If I died saving your life out of obligation(since its the right thing to do) than you are just lucky I am a good enough person to not watch bad stuff happen in front of me.
If I was devoted to the point Id die for you that means you could murder me and I would not hold it against you. I would just be happy I served you in my life.
There is a difference between obligated debt vs devoted debt. There is very few I devote myself to. Yet there will always be those I am obligated to. I do not devote myself to anyone.
