The situation you're describing does seem like insecurity, yes.
I am married an my husband and I talked about it for a while before hand, there was no fighting or strife over it. He brought up the idea and it worked for the both of us.
It has it's legal and financial advantages (it makes our lives together less stressful when it comes to managing finances and paperwork as a married couple rather than individually). Marriage isn't necessary but if both parties are in mutual agreement, then you get a few perks. It's not for everyone, if you don't want to get married, don't do it.
Is it normal to believe that marriage is just a sign of insecurity?
