Hmm, it's difficult to say. On the one hand you are observing a trend around you.
But you would have to rule out any other factors, area you guys live in, upbringing, general attitudes and so on. Ancedotal experience doesn't count for much, my only experience was dating a flamboyant bisexual, and he was obsessed with designers, would spend $200 on a pair of jeans like it was nothing.
I don't know, maybe it's just the gay men who are really into fashion and since designers are big right now, that's what they get into, hence breeding the shallow attitude.
And of course, to be fair, far too many people are far too worried about these things.
