Is it normal to become nostalgic when smelling certain things?

I seem to become overwhelmed with nostalgia when i smell certain things. Even thought I can't put my finger on what that smell is, it brings back memories. It is such a lovely feeling but at the same time makes me feel down and sad that I am growing older. Does anyone else get this to the level I do and IIN? x t33h33

Is It Normal?

  • In a crowded mall I smelled perfume and I thought of my kindergarden teacher 30 years earlier. I do not know the perfume and I do not remember noticing it then but I think smell is a strong memory stimulator because it is so subtle.

  • Yeah its So normal! I can be taken back to an old room I had as a kid, or swear I can smell my grandmother. It is sometimes sad, but sometimes it's amazing coz its your own private memory moment!

  • It's normal. Whenever its raining and I take a deep breath I always think back to when I kissed my girlfriend in the rain. And when I smell cotton candy it reminds me of when she fell asleep in my bed( we are long distance so we rarely see each other) and when I feel warmth on a cold day I think of when I held her in my arms from behind while she leaned on me(:

As you notice, most smells remind me of being with her(:

  • Of course it's normal. Smell is the sense most connected to memory.
