Is it normal to be terrified of elevators?

  • When the computer thinks the car is empty, it will go into free fall sometimes, or stop abruptly and blast off to the upper floors. You can get that Amusement park experience right in the heart of New York City.

    • This almost seems like it could be real.

      • Usually works when one computer is driving a bank of three or more elevator cars, and the elevators are spanning 12 floors or so vertically. The computer will place empty cars at different heights depending on the "stop schedule" it has at the moment. If you stay on after the last selected floor is reached, get ready for a wild ride.

        • I can't believe that any elevators in the U.S. function the way you describe. Wouldn't this violate some safety code?

          • Of course not. In busy buildings in major cities, elevators must be coordinated to cut wait time. Otherwise, all three elevators might stop on the same floor at the same time to pick up one person, while other people on other floors have long waiting times. Complicated queuing algorithms running in the computer optimize performance.

          • Yep. Thems Japanese engineers is pretty good at keepin f(t) = d⁴x/dt⁴ on zero the whole time. Actually, that's challenging shit.
