Is it normal to be suckered into a marketing scheme?

A few months ago a heard of this rewards program that Starbucks was doing. You registered a gift card, reloaded it, and used it as a pre-paid credit card. You get some cool benefits for being a member, but once you make 30 transactions with your card, you get to be on the gold member list and Starbucks will send you a gold card that you can use (along with some more benefits). Now, I took a graphic design and advertising class in college so I know about all this marketing stuff, but for some reason I got sucked into wasting my money on something I would normally not care for. I tried to make the best out of this situation by only getting the cheapest item on the menu each time to maximize the amount of transactions for the money, but that still doesn't really matter. Now I have 29 stars and I'm going to get my 30th star tomorrow and I'll have the gold card and I'll be happy, but I feel really suckered into this... like the big CEOs are watching me rubbing their hands together and snickering as they bathe in their money. Is it normal to fall for advertising like this?

  • I must say I understand. This is the one of the largest industries in Notth America 'advertising'. Over 200 Billion is spent to make you feel like you have to have shit you don't need. So don't feel bad sounds like you know what's what. I fall into the Canadian Tire Money thing (store money when you buy stuff, even gas)
