Pardon me, I believe I missed the part of the post where I was rude.
1. Unlike alcohol, MDMA, cocaine and many other drugs, cannabis does not work along the reward pathway of the brain, therefore it is not addictive in the sense that there is a physical dependance. Lacking physical dependance (which occurs in both cigarettes and alcohol, which are legal) one can liken addiction to marijuana to addiction with coffee. How many people in the world need their coffee in the morning? But we dont ship them off to rehab. And in my opinion (being a weed smoker) its a weak individual who becomes addicted to such a mild substance.
However there are essentially no physical symptoms to quitting smoking weed, its not like pills or heroin where youll be horribly sick and might die. You might might be a little grumpy or a little less hungry for a day or few. :P
2. Gateway drug theory is nothing more than a logical fallacy. Essentially it would be the same thing as claiming riding a two wheeler is a gateway to joining Hell's Angels, because thats how the Hell's angels got started. (Ill include the article I got that from :3) http://healthland.time.com/2010/10/29/marijuna-as-a-gateway-drug-the-myth-that-will-not-die/
Hopefully I have managed to answer all your questions thoroughly; I can provide more links, just hard to find the same articles over again sometimes.
Sorry, I thought the "if you've been paying attention" was supposed to imply I was thick or something.
Thanks for the info.
For the person who wrote this question: Whether or not pot is harmful or not, it is normal to be worried as a lot of people think it is. So you're not weird.
Ah, my apologies. I guess I was thinking of it as most people dont actively seek out information about this kind of thing, and the studies Im talking about have been kept quiet by the media for obvious reasons. Lots of people are still so afraid of the propaganda theyd rather cover up the new information.
Is it normal to be so bothered that my gf smokes pot?
