Everything has their good and awful tiers; the problem with the anime style is that everyone thinks It's easy to do it just because it's popular, but It's just a style, and it won't make you a better or talented artist; no matter how good or popular the style is, without effort and dedication you can't advance.
Personally, I think that having a own style is a huge step to become a good artist; a good example it's the studio ghibli style: you can say it's an anime style,but it has it's own style that make it different than any other style.
