Neurological disorder, probably from orphaned genes. Your brain when it can't hear something completely tries to make sense of it, even if it converts it to something nonsensical. It's very normal in people with other neurological disorders. in fact I have it, although mine like to breathe heavily and shout at me in another language if I go to sleep. If not its an overactive God complex (ironic since you are an atheist).
Is it normal to be scared to go to sleep?

The first part makes a lot of sense. It seems like the most accurate explanation. Thanks!
