Some countries don't really do vegetarianism and they do find it odd. In the country I live in, I know people who never ever eat fruit and I've come to accept that, but other countries would find that incredible too.
However, if vegetarianism is practiced by more than about 5% in your country, then your friends are of above average ignorance.
