It's not very nice. And to be honest, this is expected of people and humanity because most of us have no regard or empathy towards animals. As egotistical beings, we see ourselves as 'above' them, and will often use animals for our benefit -- food, clothing, entertainment.
It's cruel and unacceptable, but don't stop your habits of eating vegetarian food because you are saving lives of animals, and at the very least, you are not spending money and supporting the animal food industry. Stick up for what you think is right, and screw other people, they don't understand and don't have the capacity to.
