Yes it is normal because we live in a society where we make sex into a much bigger deal than it really is, act like it is some life changing experience, and try to scare kids into not having it.
Reality is that it is just a fun thing for two adults to share. If you both go in with that attitude, and are open to exploring and trying new things, you should have a good time even if you aren't the world's greatest lover your first time out.
