It sounds like he is shy or you both go blank in online chats. Well just find activities something fun and exciting when you do hang out and if you have great time he is most likely feeling the same way. That way its more about body language that both of you will sense off each other(So there is no need for award blank conversation). Try going to do more outgoing stuff like dacing,concerts,and stuff that involves less talking and more communication though other means of talking. Of course you going to talk but its going to be short and simple from what your saying so just try to be more outgoing one of you is going to have to step up to the plate and if he is not interested there are plenty more people in this world. Keep your head held high, being outgoing goes a long ways.
Im a shy person myself but I learned first hand if you are the one that keeps things going with conversations and stuff like that they will respond back to all that your saying if there interested in you.
