Is it normal to be obsessed with the 80s?

I am in love with the 80s, even though I was born in mid '89, so I was barely around back then. The only music I listen to is from the 80s, I do watch quite a lot of 80s movies and I even collect anything I can find that looks 80s. I even go as far as trying to dress 80s, even though I can't really get the makeup and hair right. So is this normal or not?

I lived through them. I liked the way chicks would dress in tube skirts and pantyhose and big hair with glossy lipstick. That part was great. The Kelly Bundy look was all the rage. No complaints from me.

But the music...MTV was a HUGE new medium that actually played videos at the time. You'd sit there, just praying that the next video would be a good song. Unfortunately, there were very few vids at the time and certain videos were consistently in rotation - at least once an hour - "Who Can It Be Now", "I Ran" (holy crap - was this one played and played), "Kids In America", "1999", "Safe T Dance", "867-5309", some Loverboy song, "Lucky Star" (another 'oh no, not again' video), etc. And of course Michael Jackson. When Van Halen "Jump", would come on, you could hear a collective cheer from people all over the neighborhood. Didn't like the new wave stuff - if you want to hear an incredible rock album, check out The Replacements "Let It Be" from 1984 or 85.

People thought the Mullet was here to stay - as if the hair styling industry reached the peak of creativity and had nowhere else it could go. That's why I sigh when I see kids in their 20s getting tats just because they're currently in style - the Permanent Mullet.

Everyone loved watching "21 Jump Street", The Bundy show (can't recall the name), "Miami Vice" (another 'style has reached it's apex and will never get better' belief).

Anyway, tl;dr - The 80s had some good things, some bad - just like every decade - but the 90s were GREAT when it came to music and the beginning of surfing the web. I got flamed in 1994 for trying to sell a guitar on the Internet - "the world wide web is NOT for commercial purposes!".

I'm also obsessed. I could probably teach you EXACTLY how to do the hair and makeup. I have my hair like David Sylvian's...

It's normal. (Especially compared to a lot of the stuff I see here!) I love a lot of 80's stuff too. (Although I was alive all throughout '80 to '89 I hardly remember the first half.)

The 80's were a good time for movies (1989 was one of Hollywood's most successful single years), they were the golden age of video games (my single favorite thing in the world), and I've been really into New Wave music since 2006. (I first got into it in 2005 with the game GTA Vice City, but I really didn't get interested until 2006 when I saw a modern New Wave band perform live.)

I like 80's fashions too, especially the really disastrous ones. (I'm a guy, so I wouldn't wear too many of the women's fashions from that time period.) ...But I can't deny I like seeing it on other people... Just don't ask me to get a Mike Score hairdo!

I've always been obsessed with other decades, when I was little I loved the 50's and 60's, when I got to high school I became obsessed with the 80's, I dressed like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, I'm not as wild anymore, but I still look pretty 80's. And I still wish I could marry Bruce Springsteen.

Yes it is very normal, I was born in 1987 and in the 90s as a kid I was already obsessed with the 80s: music and movies, my two older siblings grew up in the 80s as teens so that rubbed off on me and I grew a strong love for the 80s on my own aswell. In my late teens/early 20s I became completely in love with the 80s: The music (all genres, mainstream, one-hit-wonders, obscure stuff too) and movies of course...even fashion and hair (bigger the better ;), To this very day I still love 80s fashion, I've studied the fashions and trends of the 80s very well, from top to bottom.

The 80s was a very carefree time (at least for the youth), it was a dance/music/fashion craze era and a very experimental decade. Things were a lot less complicated than it is today. And yes it had it's bad moments just like any decade, but if you look at the comparisons to other decades, it really stood out from the rest.

I'm so much of a fan of the 80s I can tell a particular year just by looking at a picture/video/movie...the styles/hair all gives it away :P

The 80s and 90s is my eras.

As for the 70s?, definitely not better. A much more simpler time yes, but you had much less variety on fashion choices, the music was good, but not as good and diverse as the 80s. just look at the 80s as a MAJOR upgrade of the 70s lol. and the 90s a upgrade from the 80s, kinda downgrade fashion wise as 90s fashion was a bit bleh and so was a lot of the music but still good.

If you need fashion or hair tips from the 80s, Lemme know!

I have to add this just for historical purposes - "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me", and "She Blinded Me With Science" probably contributed to a rash of suicides from overplay.

You were not barely around, you were for your purposes not alive. I'm older and wonder if I lived in the real live 80s, I can never find out because memories don't have datestamps. (though I read that 80s pop culture lasted 1 year later than the calendar, just like the "real" centuries were 1789-1914, WWI-Cold War, and 1992-?)

I disagree, kind of. 90's had great music and people dressed like bums. Although you can't go wrong with 70's music. NOT DISCO!!!!
