i say no, not normal. simply for the fact that you say you are obsessed with this.
The reason i think so is this: Even in flat hierarchys or friendly work atmosphere, you will usually have a person being in charge, for simple sake of project management. A person that tries to coordinate the others, that makes sure everybody does their part. If i have a good understanding of the task at hand, that may be me. If i don't, and am just helping, that may be someone better suited. But even if we are all equally clueless, many more complicated tasks simply get done better and quicker if someone takes charge/responsibility and coordinates the others.
Disapproving of this simply for the reason that he IS taking charge, i find highly counterproductive.
