Is it normal to be obsessed with ducks

Not in a perverted way or anyting. I just really like ducks. Sometimes I wish I was a duck. Their life seems so fun all they do is eat and play all day.

You know how some kids are obsessed with unicorns or batmans. I had a duck themed bedroom. I'm 35 now and I just really want to be a duck.

I was thinking of getting a pet duck. What do you think?

Is It Normal?

  • I had a duck as a pet and let me tell you he was the most adorable thing ever.
He truly acted like a dog, he was loyal, he was affectionate and he would respond to me calling him.
I originally purchased like 5 ducklings to not let him be alone but they all died because they were taken away from their mother too soon apparently!
Anyway, he was absolutely fantastic and he imprinted with me!
(He thought I was his mom so he just followed me everywhere)
He became truly a human not wanting to meet other ducks, even female ones because he was afraid of them! lol
He was the best pet I've ever had (he lived approximately 6 years so he died of old age) and when he died he went to hide because he didn't want me to see him suffering just as dog do!
I am truly crying while I am typing this, because 4 year have gone by but he was and truly is irreplaceable!
If you want to have a pet duck take it, it will be the best thing!
Ah, I now own two geese and they are not the same thing as the duck! They are a bit aggressive and very territorials!
    Don't mess ducks with geese!

    • That's geese, lol, not gooses. So, I take it that you're not into eating duck? I guess they are kinda cute, I just haven't thought about that while eating duck. One animal I will not eat is lamb, because they really are so cute and innocent

      • Thanks for the correction, I am not a native speaker! 😊
Yeah, I don't eat duck at all or foie gras which is even worse I think.
I understand that you don't eat lamb, I don't because I don't like the taste but not because I find it cute!
I mean, every animal is cute when it's little, but I think what does it for me it's that I've always considered ducks as you would consider dogs: pets that live with you that you could never ever imagine eating!
So I don't eat ducks for this reasons and recently I've had troubles eating chickens as well because I started having them for eggs.

        • Well I don't eat meat either, but I don't see anything wrong with people eating it. I mean if someone wants to eat their lamb, duck, dog, goldfish, ok... I don't think I could ever eat a pet that I loved. I also don't think I can go skydiving, but if other people want to put their lives at risk okay have fun lol

          • Yeah I think and respect all people who choose to eat ducks or other animals! It's a very personal choice and who am I to judge?

            Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I've heard of people keeping ducks as pets, but it's cruel to do so without providing some sort of paddling pond.

I've also vaguely recall hearing that they can be helluva messy, so you'd be wise to look into the practicalities of housing and caring for ducks before getting one.

    • Well I grew up on a farm so I'm not used to having Ducks inside. I was thinking of having one live in the backyard. I have a kiddy pool, I'm sure that'll do in a pinch.

      • Please don't have just one duck, at least two, they're flock creatures not loners. I like them too, but they are very messy

        • Well my family had over 50 ducks... They smell I don't think I want that many.

          • I said "at least two", not over 50! There's no need to go to such extremes, but one duck by itself won't be very happy. Just get two females and they'll be company for each other or if you want little ducklings later on, a male and a female.

  • I had two male ducks when I was a kid. We got them when they were still yellow and we didn't know if they were male or female. They both turned out to be male and I enjoyed them but they grew up and would sometimes peck and pull at each other and at me. They would grab my arm and pinch with their beak and chase me around. We finally took them to a lake where there were other ducks. I think a male and female or two females would be ok for pets.

  • Ducks are cool, but they don't make good pets. Consider something that's more domesticated.

    • Well I had a snake once

      • I have a Boa Constrictor. They make great pets. Costs a lot for the tank and setup, lights, heat ect. ect. But aside from the expense, they are almost care-free. He eats one rat every 10 to 14 days. I get them frozen and just thaw them out. Poops about every two weeks or so.
But I would advise anyone considering getting one to watch all the You Tube videos you can about their care and feeding and handling before just going out and buying one. They will bite if they think they're getting food. So you have to learn all about them. They're not for everyone and live 20 to 30 years.
So I guess I shouldn't talk about getting something more domesticated. A large snake is hardly domesticated. A smaller snake like a corn snake would be better for a beginner.

        • I had a garter snake. I begged my mom for it because I loved its cute little beady eyes.. I refused to leave the store without it.

I don't think I would have another reptile, though. Like you said, theyre a lot of work and personally I think they are too hard to take care of.

          I really want a duck

    • Sheeps and lambs can be just as loving and faithful of a pet as a dog. I won't eat lamb

    • That's sad, it hardly lived any of its life. I know that I mentioned above eating duck, but I always assumed that they were grown ducks. I couldn't eat any baby animals that didn't even live much of its life yet. And lambs and sheep, I won't eat them at any age. They just seem so loving and playful and so innocent, I especially feel this way after watching this YouTube story about a woman and her pet lamb, who raised it to sheephood and it was such a loving and loyal companion, just like a faithful collie.

        • Cooked duck is gross, but live ducks are very hard to eat.

I tried biting them when I was little, but they kept running away.

            • You reminded me of a scene from the pilot episode of The Golden Girls.

Blanche : I can't eat anything with eyes.

Rose Nylund : I can't eat anything that moves.

Dorothy : (angrily) Like what, Rose, horses?!

              Rose Nylund : Like oysters.

              Coco: Oysters don't move!

Dorothy : Coco they could dance! Who cares?!

Rose Nylund : Oysters move! Very slowly, you have to watch very closely!

              Everyone: *exasperated glances*

    • I've eaten duck before, it tastes different from chicken, it's a dark meat with a tender, gamey, and fatty taste, it's pretty good. Duck is fattier than chicken and turkey. I've eaten duck at Chinese and at French restaurants. A French dish is duck a l'orange, Chinese is Peking crispy fried duck with a Chinese hoisin sauce for dipping

      • Tbh I don't like the taste of duck at all. It's too strong. Dark meat on chicken and turkey is gross to me too.

        • Disagree. Love Thanksgiving dark turkey meat smothered in gravy and stuffing, like with most meat, the more tender, the better. I love duck too, but I can see how some wouldn't like it with its strong and fatty taste.

          • Oh that's just disgusting. I'm gagging just thinking about it. But my husband loves dark meat so when I cook whole chickens, he leaves all the white meat and I have to give it to someone else. so I guess there are people who like that disgusting dark meat... Although I doubt I'll ever be able to figure out why. It's just way too strong for me.
