You've probably built him up to be something pretty special in your mind, more special than he actually is in all reality. Try conditioning yourself to think of him as if he were a brother or close friend, in a NON-sexual way of course (don't let yourself fall into fantasy-like daydreams where you two are together and everything is rainbows).
If you are afraid of his rejection of you, then it is a little more simple to deal with: People who get to know you a little, and then reject you, are not worth your time. You don't want to adjust anything about yourself to match what you think he might want in a partner because it might temporarily work, but it WILL eventually come off as fake and he'll know it. Once you realize that, you'll be free.
You will always feel a little apprehensive around those you have a crush on, but as you gain confidence in yourself, you'll know that you are worth putting yourself out there.
Is it normal to be nervous to talk to the guy you really like?
