Is it normal to be mad at a friend for getting the tattoo you wanted?

I'd told my friend about a tattoo idea I had for when I turn 18. She is already 18 so he could get one. Well I told her I wanted "carpe diem" done. She asked me what that meant and I said seize the day. That aside, she liked the idea and said I should do it. That phrase is something really personal to me and I've wanted it for a long time.
So a month later she calls me asking how to spell it. Then tells me she's getting it done and is in the shop. I didn't say anything just told her how to spell it.
Is it normal for me to be completely pissed off that she took my idea and got it done when a month ago she didn't even know what that even meant? Or how to SPELL it?
I really want this tattoo as I'm almost old enough but I don't know if I'll be able to get it without thinking of how she went behind my back like that just because she thought it was cool. There is nothing I hate more than tattoos without a strong personal meaning behind them.
Anyway. What do you think? Should I get this tattoo or will it be a constant reminder if her?

no it's not normal to be angry.

it's her skin. she can do what she wants with it. even if you feel she's "stealing" your idea.

I mean it's not like you own "carpe diem" anyway - it's been around for a while.

Do you know how many people have that tattoo if it means that much to you it shouldn't make any difference what you friend did....but i'd be totally pissed too

I'm not saying the phrase specifically. It's a lot more than simply "seize the day". There's a story and meaning behind it for me. Please don't judge that automatically.

you should go for something more original.

  • I'd be p*ssed off at her too but loads of people will have the same tattoo so just get it done. At least you know you were the one between yourself and your friend that had the idea originally.

For one idea, if you still want the tattoo, is to see how she got hers done and do it in a cooler/better way as a slight payback. But make it original something close to your heart and not hers.

"Carpe diem"? Gee how unoriginal and generic phraze, especially for a tatoo, you'd be surprised.

You should of spelled it wrong for her. If she's gonna steal your saying, she might as well have the lifelong punishment of being that dumbass person who didn't know how to spell carpe diem.
I'd be pissed if my friend got the same thing as me. I got a heart on my hip to represent my birthday (I was born on Valentines Day).

It's a very common saying, so I wouldn't be offended, take it as a compliment that your friend wants to copy you. It's the best compliment that you can get that your friend is trying to look like you

you saying carpe diem is really personal to you is a joke. and if the tattoo shop didn't know how to spell that thy mustve not been in the business too long

Is it really that common of an idea? I mean I know people have it... But it's kinda personal to me. But you guys are probably right and I don't want something a lot of people have.

It is inconsiderate of her, but that is a really typical tattoo idea. How about instead of being pissed about it you use it like a friendship bracelet type deal and get the tattoo you always wanted anyway.
