Shame on you for being embarrassed of this poor guy, because he sounds like a very good and decent person! If you're embarrassed of him then do him a favor by leaving so he can find someone who respects him and isn't embarrassed of him. Oh wait, you've got "too much invested in the relationship"... WTF!
Try to be a decent person to by asking yourself whether or not you love this man, and whether or not you can RESPECT him then act accordingly. I also think it's inappropriate to associate with your ex, why are you still friends with him?
