They helped a girlfriend of mine because she was deaf. That's kind of who they are there for. She lip-read brilliantly but people aren't always talking face-on in films and on TV.
I get insulted when people with my accent get subtitled even on TV in my own country, though. But if people don't understand regional accents, they don't understand them. I'd rather be subtitled and understood rather than people say, "Why are they letting this cretin on TV? We can't work out what he's saying".
