Is it normal to be insulted by subtitles?

If I was speaking on a TV programme in plain I think i would be insulted if they put subtitles under it. If your speaking a completely different language then of course put subtitles but if you are speaking the language of the programme then thats not fair. I also feel like my intelligence has been insulted when they put subtitles. I can understand what they are saying, stop thinking we can't! Is this normal?

  • They helped a girlfriend of mine because she was deaf. That's kind of who they are there for. She lip-read brilliantly but people aren't always talking face-on in films and on TV.

I get insulted when people with my accent get subtitled even on TV in my own country, though. But if people don't understand regional accents, they don't understand them. I'd rather be subtitled and understood rather than people say, "Why are they letting this cretin on TV? We can't work out what he's saying".

  • There are deaf people, or foreign tourists. They probably feel insulted without subtitles.

  • I think they are nice to have. Sometimes when listening to a movie, they say something very quietly and you're like "wtf did he just say?" In video games I always put subtitles, with the music and action going on, it can be hard to focus on what is being said so I read it.

  • I get really insulted when people who can't write English correctly get so insulted when they think their intelligence is being questioned.

  • Well clearly you don't understand some people are def. I guess you really don't give a shit about these type of people and would happily push them off the cliff. Fuck you op. Not everyone has good hearing.

  • I agree with Momonator. I use subtitles in video games and often in movies just to make sure I catch everything. I have better memory retention when I read the lines, too.

  • I think it is funny when American programs will subtitle Australians but not for example French who are not native English speakers

  • I would feel insulted if the subtitles didn't have anything to do with what I was actually saying.
And the translator was a jackass.
