I'm not going to vote on this one way or the other as far as 'normal' goes 'cause it's complicated. What I AM going to say is, if he doesn't notice you when other people are around, then you aren't a big enough part of his life for a relationship to work. I think you need to give up on being anything but friends and move on, sorry.
